Do you know how healthy your server is?
If you know what you’re looking for, you’re more likely to be able to stop a server failure. If you pay attention to server failure signs, you will be able to save your server or replace it, but most importantly, you will be able to keep your business running.
If you see any of the following triggers, you may want to dig deeper into your system so you can determine if there are any visible clues. Remember, it’s always best to have a service backing up your data off-site in case something goes wrong.
Do You Have Crashes?
It’s rare to discover random server failures before they happen. However, before there are any hardware failures, you may see a string of erratic crashes or events. These small erratic signs you may see are serious, and you should not ignore them.
Your server management provider should have a log of all these occurrences. Some businesses may think that once the reboot or reset button is pressed, everything will magically be fixed. If you do not know why you are experiencing random crashes, you may want to consider migrating to a different server.
Read-Only
Does your file system go to “read-only” mode on a frequent basis? If so, your server may be on its way out. If you have already spent a significant amount of money on repairs and your system is still acting up, then a failure may be imminent. If you have file system corruption, it could be time to move to a new server.
When you have ruled out all possible reasons for your system freezing or corrupting, it may be time to change your server. If you have a gut feeling that nothing else will work but making changes to your server, you need to go with that feeling. Always backup your data, especially in the event of these triggers! Don’t wait until a disaster strikes, because that may be too late!
