When it comes to data backup, we like to compare things to what you experience in everyday life. A great comparison to data backup is brushing your teeth.
What happens if you don’t brush your teeth? You’ll eventually get cavities, and if you wait too long to get fillings, then you might need root canals.
What happens if you don’t back your data up? You’ll lose documents and files, and as a result, money.
So, what do these two things have in common? You don’t realize how important they are until disaster strikes, and at that point, it’s too late to fix the problem. Moreover, both brushing your teeth and backing your data up are preventative measures which only take a few minutes a day.
According to a recent Tech Radar article, however, businesses don’t take data backup seriously even if they understand the consequences:
“Despite this, there are still businesses which don’t take data protection seriously. The situation is similar to skipping regular medical check-ups or failing to visit the dentist – until a person is very sick, they don’t think about it. People are reactive and with that comes serious risk. An examination can save or extend your life and backing up data can save businesses and consumers from suffering the grave consequences of data loss.”
Businesses that don’t practice data backup exhibit the same behavior children do when they refuse to brush their teeth. That level of stubbornness can only go on for so long.
If your business still doesn’t have a data backup plan, then we highly suggest you get one. Data backup doesn’t cost much, and it will eventually save your business money by avoiding data loss.
We forgot to mention just one tiny difference between not brushing your teeth and not backing your data up. If you don’t brush your teeth, your dentist will tell you that you have a cavity or two and that there’s still time to protect your other teeth. Data loss, on the other hand, happens in one crushing wave. There are no warning signs like cavities.
