Summary
In this three part series on security and the cloud I have attempted to educate you about the meaning of the term “The Cloud” and some of the ways it can be used. Let’s have a quick recap for our attention impaired readers out there.
1) Cloud Backup – Ideal use case. Accomplishes the off-site backup need while still providing rock solid security along with high data availability. Make sure you research your provider and ask questions. See our white paper here for more information on how to select a cloud backup provider.
2) Cloud Hosting – Another great case for cloud services. Perfect if you have limited IT staff or multiple locations that you need to provide services to. Again, talk with your vendor and have them explain how they protect you in their environment.
3) Cloud Storage – Convenience abounds but not for critical data or backup. This is NOT a backup and is not designed to be secure or highly available. It might be convenient but should be used with the understanding that it is not a business class solution. It is worth noting here that there are a few cloud storage providers that are starting to offer more secure solutions for business class customers. It is still sort of the “Wild West” out there as this technology grows so use with caution!
